What Goes Into Backyard Stream Construction?
Creating a backyard stream requires careful planning and expert craftsmanship. Here’s an overview of our process:
Selecting the Ideal Location
We begin by identifying the best spot for your stream—typically a location visible from inside the home or your patio. While a gentle slope is ideal, we can also build streams on flat land by grading the soil to create the necessary elevation.
Excavation and Stream Lining
Once the layout is determined, we excavate and line the streambed. A depth of 6–12 inches is usually sufficient to cover the pump and maintain proper water flow. We prioritize safety and recommend child-safe features such as fencing where needed.
Adding Natural Stone and Pebbles
To create a realistic, natural look, we add stones, boulders, and pebbles along the edges and throughout the stream. These elements also provide landing spots for birds and safe access points for small wildlife.
Pump Installation (If Needed)
If your backyard stream includes a waterfall or extended length, a pump will likely be required to circulate the water. We select and install the appropriate pump based on the size, length, and height of your stream to ensure optimal performance and minimal maintenance.
Planting Around the Stream
Strategically placed plantings enhance the natural aesthetic and encourage biodiversity. We use a mix of ornamental grasses, native shrubs, and flowering perennials to frame your backyard stream and help it blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.
Filling and Maintaining the Stream
Once the stream is in place, we fill it with water and test the flow. In warmer months, occasional water top-offs may be needed to offset evaporation.
Optional Lighting for Nighttime Appeal
To extend the enjoyment into the evening, we offer custom stream lighting options. From subtle LED uplights to underwater fixtures, we’ll help you choose the right lighting to highlight your backyard stream at night.
